More Thoughts About Buildings and Food

Weather in a word: wet.

This electric bus runs along the main road, connecting a long stretch of several villages, including Montreux, Chateau Chillon, and Vevey. Vevey has been an arts center, home to many international musicians and artists, and the headquarters for Nestles, responsible for most of the English-speaking population here.

I want to revisit my earlier appraisal of the food scene. In terms of restaurant fare, you are likely to do quite well in America, compared to here (the traditional assiette du jour [plate special of the day] served in many establishments may prove me wrong, however), but in terms of the quality of grocery foods – especially fresh or semi-prepared foods – then the stuff you find in markets here are amazingly, consistently fine. It can be expensive, but not too far off the mark, if you compare with what you might pay for the same quality of groceries in the States. It’s also fun to try the local wines; bearing their village names, you can order by deciliter and they favor a lighter palate of whites. California vineyards win every time in my book!

The Manora is a favorite destination. This child-friendly eatery combines Swiss standards for freshly prepared meals with the American cafeteria, resulting in one of the most intensely pleasurable food-fest per square meter I’ve ever landed in. I especially like the guy who grills-to-order an array of marinated meats.

Switzerland has really increased public play areas for kids, but rainy weather leaves few choices except, well, the Manora (!), which doubles as a romper room during lunch. I am struck at the degree of design work in public spaces in Europe – here, industrial chic blends with abstract visual art and you might even forget you’re in a cafeteria.

Lausanne is extending its underground metro. In 2008 it will run from the lakeside town, Ouchy, all the way to the Cathedral!

Discovered a wonderful model car store stacked high with all sizes of miniature, scaled down autos - the smallest were about 1 inch long.

Michael especially loves taking the bus, although he poops out too early on walks, climbing into Jack’s stroller.
